Jon Gray in studio finishing new E.P. for “The Violet May”

We have been very luckily to have Jon Gray here at Club60 Studio this weekend – a world class producer & engineer.

I first met Jon Gray in 2007 at Parr Street Studios, Liverpool.  He was then working alongside producer Jagz Kooner as the recording engineer on the debut album from Reverend and the Makers – “The State of Things”  (including their only big hit to date “Heavy Weight Champion of the World” – nice bass sound Jon!)

This weekend he has been up in Sheffield, here in the studio.  The purpose of his visit?  The Violet May have a new singer, Joe Hudson (Whispering Dolls) and they are currently finishing their latest E.P. which they tracked at the legendary Angelic Studios.   It seems quite a fitting place to record vocals and finish the E.P. at Club60 Studio, as this is the place they recorded their first ever demo here a few years ago – we’ve always liked supporting them!

A highlight for me this weekend has been a bit of a geeky one.

Jon brought this with him….

This is a  UM 75, a recreation of Gefell’s famous UM57 microphone. It was released in 2003, to commemorate the company’s 75-year anniversary.  The mic was sold as a limited edition; only 75 were made.  Jon (very wisely bought one) and it was used to record Joe’s vocal.  It sounds f*&^%$£ing awesome! (I want one, I want one, I want one).  Jon will take the recordings (and his microphone!) back to London and finish mixing them there.  What I’ve heard so far sounds really good so keep a look out…

The Violet May are back in the studio later this month to record the first demos with Joe singing – now that will be fun!

Station Star…

“Sheffield Train Station is to get a new claim to fame: today it will become the first transport hub in the world to stage a ‘silent concert’.”

Colin Drury features this afternoon’s Michael Eden gig at Sheffield Train Station in today’s Star. In a unique one-off headphone gig, Michael will play tunes from his forthcoming album Doors in the station whilst the audience are free to wander whilst wirelessly listening wherever they find themselves.

Get yourselves down, hire some headphones (£10 refundable deposit) & enjoy! Part of the amazing Sensoria festival. Michael plays on Sat 28 April on The Moor as well…

Heroes championed by Star…

Club60 Presents…

..a leap year spectacular starring—
Unsung National Heroes, sieben & Pip Moujntjoy
at the Greystones, Sheffield.

Celebrating the release of the debut Unsung National Heroes album (available here), recorded at our gaff, we’re promoting a night at one of Sheffield’s best live venues. It’s also a blinding pub with great ales.

Pip Mountjoy

Starting the evening off is singer/songwriter Pip Mountjoy.  A 17 year old hailing from Richmond, North Yorkshire this girl can sing!  Currently part of the BBC Introducing campaign we recommend you take this opportunity to witness something special.

Next off we will showcase the mighty sieben. Matt Howden appears on the Unsung National Heroes album and is a well known friend with Cowling Wolf. His latest album “No Less Than All” has just been released and we love his work. If you have never witnessed a live sieben show then we can only but recommend – it’s breathtaking. Taking it to another level!

Unsung National Heroes

Tonight’s closing act are a very special, new favourite. 2011 saw the birth, realisation and recording of this band – a testament to all involved. Featuring great crafted songs, played eloquently and with vigour, this band are set to rock 2012. Their debut album was recorded at Club60 and we feel this is going to be one hell of show. Analogue… everybody’s at it!

Counterfeit magazine has just gone analogue too… their first offering in print features an in-depth interview with the Club60 team about the running of the studio & the background to the Singles Club and a cracking review of the record.

Late Night Double Vinyl Special

Club60 launched the release of their first Singles Club double vinyl with a 7-band extravaganza at new venue Shakespeare’s in Shalesmoor, Sheffield.
